The process of learning any instrument and music is usually best understood by using a variety of examples.
Etudes, Studies, Caprices, and Method Books constitute a portion of a musical education. They teach us many of
the different ways (techniques) we need to play our instrument. Pieces also make up a large portion. They develop
our musicality and passion for the sound that we are learning to produce. Below is a semi-complete list of possible
method books and pieces we will work on. Only after we discuss which ones will best suit you should you go and
purchase!
For the beginning student, I use the All For Strings Method Books. They are excellent ways of learning not only
to play the violin, but note reading (much overlooked in the beginning stages of the Suzuki Method), rhythm
reading, etc... To me, this is a fundamental that needs to be understood from the very beginning which will lead
to greater enjoyment and understanding of music in later years of study.  The material is presented in an easy to
understand manner and can be quite fun too!
Beginning
All For Strings Method, Books 1-3, Violin
All For Strings Theory Workbooks 1-3, Violin
Below is a list of the majority of the method and etude books I use for all levels of students. Each is designed to
dramatically improve a student's technique and in turn elevate his or her enjoyment of playing.
Beginning-Advanced
Wohlfahrt, Franz - 40 Elementary Studies, Op. 54

A good introductory etude book; used in conjunction with All For Strings Books 2-3.
Beginning
Laoureux, Nicolas - Practical Method for Violin Pt 1 & 2

Continues process of note learning and reading along with wonderful exercises to aid in bowing.
Beginning-Intermediate
Kayser, Heinrich - 36 Elementary & Progressive Studies, Op. 20

The often overlooked etude book; not to be glazed over! These teach advancing technique while
making it very easy to grasp. (In my opinion, more important than the Kreutzer)
Intermediate-Advanced
Kreutzer, Rodolphe - 42 Studies

One of the most respected and used etude books in publication. Advanced techniques in
well-written pieces/etudes. Frequently required at auditions (Senior Regional Orch, etc...)
Intermediate-Advanced
Rode, Pierre - 24 Caprices

These quite technically difficult caprices go beyond the standard etude and act as "show-piece"
learning tools. Frequently required at auditions (All-State, college and conservatory auditions,
etc...)
Advanced
The Suzuki books are wonderful for the pieces within each book. They are perfectly ordered for a young violinist's
development and improvement. I use these books for the pieces contained, NOT for the method of teaching.
Beginning-Intermediate
Suzuki Violin School - Violin Part - Volume One - Ten
Below is an incomplete list of concertos and pieces studied by more advanced students. They are pieces that
should be in every student violinist's library!

Bach, J.S. - Concerto #2 in E Violin & Piano
Bach, J.S. - 6 Sonatas & Partitas-Violin Solo
Bruch, Max - Concerto #1 in g Violin & Piano
Kabalevsky, Dimitri - Concerto In C Major, Op. 48
Mendelssohn, Felix - Concerto in e minor, Op. 64
