FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where can I take lessons?
I will teach out of my home in Manhattan. Parents are welcome to wait inside
during a child's lesson.

Will you come to my home to teach a lesson?
While this is not common, it is not out of the question. The lesson fee is
considerably higher and is only possible for 1 hour lessons.

How long will my lessons be?
I teach 1 hour, 45 and 30 minute lessons. The length of your lesson depends
on a number of factors and can be decided after a discussion with you and
your parents.

How often should I have lessons?
It is typical for a student to have one lesson per week. Occasionally, every other
week lessons may be arranged or having multiple lessons per week is also
possible.

How much do lessons cost?
Please inquire via email or phone for current studio lesson rates.

How do I know that your teaching is any good?
I would be happy to provide you with references of past students and/or their
parents. There is no better way to see if we "fit"  than to begin trial lessons, but
requesting feedback from prior students is a close second.

What is your teaching philosophy?
While the answer to this question is a page in itself, the short answer is: If it isn't
fun, why do it? That is my job, to make it as exciting and enjoyable as possible.
On the flip side, a level of commitment must be shown by every student. If you
work hard, I'll work twice as hard to make sure you enjoy playing. If you don't
take at least some satisfaction from the achievements you will make, then I am
probably not the teacher for you. Show me that you love it and I'll help you make
your fantasies come true!

I have a high-profile lifestyle. Can this be confidential?
All communication between teacher/parent and teacher/student are held in the
utmost confidence. Please know that for
all of my students, all lessons are
between you, me, your parents, and four walls. All lessons indicated on the
online calendar are by initials only, and can be configured to your choice.

What methods or materials do you use to teach?
I like to use a combination of different method books and pieces. I teach using
traditional methods, although I do use the Suzuki books in combination with
other methods.  Click here to learn more.

When do children typically begin taking violin lessons?
It is typical for a child to begin lessons at age six. I do teach students who
are younger than six, but only if a parent or guardian is present during each
lesson.

My child is much older than six. Is it too late?
Definitely not. There is a belief that if a student does not begin studies before
the double digits, he or she will not develop the technical facility to play well. I
hope that I am living proof of the opposite. Beginning studies at age 11, I did not
start formal lessons until 14. Less than ten years later, I had won my first
professional symphony audition. If I can do it, so can you.

I am an adult. Is it too late for me to take lessons?
Absolutely not. First, know that you are not alone! Many of the inquiries I get are
from adults, many of which have no background in music. Playing the violin
requires a good deal of discipline and cognitive ability, areas in which adults
generally have an advantage. If you are a parent with a young child who is
interested in taking violin lessons, consider taking lessons
along with your child
to better help them practice during the week. The lesson fee for parent/child is
only an additional $10.
